Importation of Slaves banned in America
The importation of slaves from Africa to America was banned. This ended the legality of U.S. based transatlantic slave trade. Slavery continued to happen in the U.S. until the end of the civl war but importing them was banned. -
Irish Potato Famine
Ireland went through a famine of potatos from 1845 to 1852 and so they had to move to America in order to have food. -
Homestead Act
Anyone who had never taken up arms against the U.S. goernment including free slaves and women, immigrants, 21 or older, or head of a family, could file an application to claim a federal land grant. -
Chinese Exclusion Act
The U.S. suspended Chinese immigration. This was intended to last for 10 years. -

Congress passed an act that said 50 cents tax would be levied on all immigrants landing at United States ports. -

This acr restricted immigration to the United States to 3% of what it was. -
Immigration Act of 1965
The 1965 Immigration Act signed by Lyndon Johnson abolished the national-origin quota system that had been executed in the United States since the Immigration Act of 1924. -
Bosnian Serbian War 1992-1995
On April 6, 1992, the Bosnian Serbs began their siege of Sarajevo. Muslim, Croat, and Serb residents opposed to a Greater Serbia were cut off from food, utilities, and communication. For three years, food was scarce and the average weight loss per person was more than 30 pounds. More than 12,000 residents of Sarajevo were killed during the 43 months. Many of the Serbian and Bosnian people moved from their countries and came to America because they were starving or their homes burned down. -
Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act
This act states that immigrants unlawfully in the Unites States for 188 days but less than 365 days must remain outside of the U.S> for thre years unless they obtain a pardon. If they are there for over 365 days they must stay away for 10 years unless they obtain a waiver. -
Patriot Act
This was a response to 9/11 where people who were suspected to be any sort of terrorist could be detained or deported by authorities. -
SB1070
Governor Jan Brewer signed this act into a law on April 23, 2010. This act madeit a state misdemeanor crime for an immigrant to be in Arizona without carrying the required documents. This allowed for cops to ask people for thier papers if there is reasonablt suspicion that they might be an illegal immigrant. -
Immigration Reform 2013
In the backdrop of arguments beginning anew on Capitol Hill at the Senate Judiciary Committee regarding the proposed immigration bill submitted by the bipartisan U.S. Senate panel known as the "Gang of Eight," President Obama called for the passage of the bill as a necessary step forward for the nation.
