Creation of the United States

Jul 4, 1776

The declaration of Independence was a paper saying that American colonies were separating from British rule. On July 4th, the congress accepted the Declaration of Independence by voting.

Berlin Blockade

Jun 24, 1948

The Berlin Blockade prevented all land and river transit between West Berlin and West Germany. This was one of the first major international crises of the Cold War.

Creation of NATO

Apr 4, 1949

NATO was formed as a union of countries from Europe and North America. It was made to guarantee freedom, and security of its members.

Second Red Scare

1950

The Second Red scared happened right after WW2. Many people were spreading fear communist/Soviet influence on American organizations.

Korean War

This war was a conflict between North and South Korea. Millions of people lost their lives and both countries decided to be divided.

Cuban Revolution

This event involved a group of Cubans led by Fidel Castro in order to overthrow Fulgencio Batista. This happened when Fulgencio Batista became government.

Space Race

Aug 2, 1955

This event was a competition between the U.S. and the Soviet Union to see who has the best spaceflight capability. In the end both sides decided to cooperate in space.

Vietnam War

This war was a conflict between North Vietnam and South Vietnam. North Vietnam ended up winning the war even though the U.S. helped South Vietnam.

Suez Crisis

The Egyptian Government had control of the Suez Canal. Britain, France, and Israel invaded Egypt to get back control.

Bay of Pigs Invasion

This was an invasion of Cuba by many Cubans to overthrow Fidel Castro. This attempt ended up failing.

Berlin Crisis of 1961

In this event the Soviet Union cut off land access between West Germany and West Berlin. This caused a crisis and lead up to the Berlin wall being built.

Cuban Missile Crisis

Oct 16, 1962

Nuclear missile sites were being built by the Soviet Union on an island on Cuba. This event almost brought the United States and the Soviet Union close to war.

Soviet Invasion of Czechoslovakia

Aug 20, 1968

During this event many troops went and invaded Czechoslovakia. Many Czechs and Slovaks were killed, and many were wounded.

Chernobyl Disaster

Apr 26, 1986

During this time a huge explosion happened and demolished a reactor building. This caused a lot of radiation to go into the atmosphere.

Fall of the Berlin Wall

The Berlin Wall was a wall that separated communist East Germany and West Germany. The wall fell during an arranged press conference.
