East Germany started closing the border between West and East Berlin. it began with barbed wire. barrier then included guard towers placed along concrete walls. many people illegally crossed the border. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
13 day confrontation between the Soviet Union and Cuba on one side and the U.S. on the other. came close to being a nuclear confrontation. Nikita Khrushchev had the idea of putting Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba to prevent any future invasions. a secret agreement was reached and they put 7 missiles on their Cuban base. the U.S. thought about attacking Cuba via air and sea but decided on military blockade instead. confrontation ended when Kennedy reached an agreement with Khrushchev. -
Six Day War
fought by Israel, Eqypt, Jordan, and Syria. Israel launched surprise bomb raids against Epytian air-fields. Israel won the land war and took control of the Gaze Strip and the Sinai Peninsula from Eqypt, the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, and Golan Heights from Syria. -

there was an announcement saying the borders were open and people didn't know whether to believe it or not. some people chipped at the side of the wall with hammers and there was alot of celebration. -

15 republics of Soviet Union got freedom. marked the end of the Cold War.
