What- Sputnik was a small satellite, a 23" sphere with gour legs. Russia launched it into orbit

This was the second part of the Chinese Civil War. Mao zedong created the People's Republic of China in 1959.

U2 Spy Plane Shot Down
When- May 1st, 1960
Who- United States and Great Britain, the Soviet Union
What- First, British pilots were used on the first two flights so that if anything happened, the Soviet Union would not suspect the United States. Then an American- Piloted U2 Plane was shot down in Soviet Union. The plane was actually a US surveillance plane. However it took the US a while to admit this. It was a great embarrassment to the United States

Berlin Wall goes up (Start)

What- Separated West Berlin from East Berlin and East Germany. There were many watch towers on on the walls
How- This increased disputes in Germany, and also added to the rivalry of other countries -

Cuban Missile Crisis
When- October 14-28, 1963
Who- Soviet Union and Cuba, United States
What- Us had placed nuclear missiles in Turkey, and Soviet Union placed them in Cuba. A dispute that led to US blockading Cuba, and eventually removing missiles from Turkey in order for Soviets to remove them from Cuba
How- This affected the Cold War because it was the closest we came to a war of nuclear weapons, which could have destroyed major parts of the earth. -

Russia Invades Afghanistan
When- December 1979- October 1989
Who- Soviet Union and Afghan forces, Peshawar Seven (Pakistan, China, US, UK, Saudi Arabia) and Tehran Eight (Iran)
What- Rebels wanted to rise in power. Millions of civilians migrated to Iran and Pakistan, while many were killed along with many rebels.
How- Greater tensions between the US and Soviet Union. Many other countries also were involved against the Soviet Union.
