Events of the Cold War

  • Chinese Revolution

    It was between Japan and the Chinese. The Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong declared the creation of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The announcement ended the costly full-scale civil war between the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the Nationalist Party, or Kuomintang (KMT), which broke out immediately following World War II and had been preceded by on and off conflict between the two sides since the 1920’s.
  • Korean War

    Nations and North Korea, at one time supported by the People's Republic of China and the Soviet Union. It was the result of the political division of Korea by an agreement of the victorious Allies at the conclusion of the Pacific War at the end of World War ll.it also expanded the Cold War, which to that point had mostly been concerned with Europe.
  • U2 spy plane shot down

    The americans sent a spy plane over the soviet union but it was shot down while flying over Russia. It was one of the most dramatic moments of the Cold Wat by producing not only the mostly intact wresckage of the U-2 but also the captured pilot.
  • Uprising of Hungary

    : It was the first major threat to Soviet control since the USSR's forces drove out the Nazis at the end of World War II and occupied Eastern Europe. Despite the failure of the uprising, it was highly influential, and came to play a role in the downfall of the Soviet Union decades later. The battle spread quickly across Hungary and the government fell apart.
  • Sputnik Launched (space race)

    The Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik I and it was the worlds first satellite to about the size of a beach ball. While the Sputnik launch was a single event, it marked the start of the space age and the U.S.-U.S.S.R space race. This impacted the Cold War because the United States believed it had a weapon in it that was going to be fired at them and they also felt like they were behind on technology.
  • Berlin Wall goes up

    This was a barrier constructed by the Soviet Union that started on 13 August 1961 and completely cut off (by land) West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin. The barrier included guard towers placed along large concrete walls, which circumscribed a wide area (later known as the "death strip") that contained anti-vehicle trenches and other defenses. It impacted the war because the wall was a symbol of the growing tensions between the westernized government and the communist.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    This battle took place between the Soviet Union and Cuba on one side and the United States on the other side. This crisis generally regarded as the moment in wich the Cold War came closest to turning into a nuclear conflict.
  • Russia Invades Afghanistan

    The Soviets 40th Army invaded Afghanistan in order to prop up the communist government of the People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) against a growing insurgency. People who were against the Amin goverment and wanted to overthrow it joined the Mujahdeen. They fought against the Russians for power. The Cold War heated back up against both sides after the invasion on Afghanistan.
