Korean War
First military action of the cold war
-war against north and South Korea going back and forth over the 38th parallel

-trigger of the war was when Syngman Rhel boasted that he was going to attack North Korea, causing the north Koreans to invade South Korea

Sputnik launched (and the space race)
The US and USSR attempted to fight the cold war by demonstrating their power and technology
-They realized how important rocket research would be to the military
-each side tried to show that they had better scientists and technology by achieving certain space missions first

-captured pictures of long range missiles in Cuba
-they could reach any point of the United States
-the CIA assured the president that the Russians didn’t have the equipment to shoot down the high altitude planes
-when the U2 spy plane mysteriously disappeared over Russia the CIA once again reassured that even if the plane was shot down it would self-destruct

7. Berlin Wall goes up
-separated East and West Berlin
-prevented people from fleeing East Berlin
-East Germany – communist controlled by the Soviet Union
-West Germany- democratic allies with Britain, France, and the US
-they were supposed to reunite
-people living in east Germany realized they didn’t want to be controlled by the soviet union and communism, so they would move to the western part.

-fought between Afghanistan rebels called the Mujahideen and the Afghanistan government supported by the soviets
