Chinese Revolution
WHO: Kuomintang/Chinese National Party, ROC with help of US (based in Taiwan) vs. Communist Party of China, CCP with help of Soviet Union (based in mainland China)
WHAT:US tried to help Nationalist Party when they were pushed out into Taiwan by Mao Zedong. Nationalists had a hard time after Japanese War. Communist Party took over and tried to spread communism and succeeded.
COLD WAR: Since communism was spreading, there was a bigger urge to stop it. -
Korean War
WHO: Republic of Korea (South) with help of UN vs. Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North) with help of Soviet Union. WHAT:There was political division since South was right-winged so a 38th parallel was created separating the two. Commi North attacked the South. It was a three year war and 5 million died, there is still division today between with a DMZ. COLD WAR: First military action of Cold War. US stepped in trying to help the south since we didn't want the spread of communism. -
Uprising In Hungary and Czech Part Two
WHO: On August 20, 1968 Warsaw Pact troops and Soviets against Czechoslovakia. WHAT: Warsaw Pact troops and Soviets invaded Czech to stop liberation in communist country. Czechs protested non-violently but Soviet tanks overthrew. COLD WAR: Czech started to have more freedoms and socialism but since Soviets stepped in, it spread communism. US tried to stop this spread of communism in Cold War. -
Uprising In Hungary and Czech
WHO:Soviet Union and State Protection Authority were trying to stop the Hungarian revolutionaries. WHAT:Nationwide revolt against the government of the People's Republic of Hungary but uprising failed.Hungarian revolutionists wanted political changes since they didn't like the soviet policies.There was a huge march which helped the collapse of the Hungarian government until Soviet forces invaded Budapest.Leading to downfall of Soviet Union later on. Space Race and Sputnik
WHO: Soviets against United States and each other’s space programs. WHAT: On this date, Soviets launched Sputnik, the world’s first satellite that was manmade to be in Earth’s orbit. US needed to one up since its space program was so advanced so launched own satellite, Explorer l. Went back and forth until US created NASA and landed first man on the moon in1969. -
Space Race Part Two
Soviets just kept failing attempts so US won the space race. COLD WAR: This aided the major “race” between US and Soviet Union to either stop or spread communism. Yet the handshake between Soviet and US astronauts symbolized improvement between their relations in late Cold War. -
U2 Spy Plane Shot Down (Francis Gary)
WHO: Francis Gary Powers flying the U-2 plane and Soviet Union. WHAT: Francis disappeared and was shot down over Russia but since it was a spy plane US government said it was just weather plane. Khrushchev captured Francis alive and made Eisenhower admit that it was a spy plane. COLD WAR: Soviet Union found out we had spy planes and we were caught in a lie. -
Cuban Missle Crisis
WHO: Soviet Union and United States. WHAT: U-2 planes caught images in Cuba of nuclear warheads made my Soviet Union. This was concerning for US since 90mil away. US already had nuclear missiles near Soviet Union(Turkey), both sides came close to nuclear war. COLD WAR: Khrushchev wanted to up the ante for the stakes of Cold War since he thought US wanted to invade Cuba. -
Berlin Wall
WHO: Between East and West Berlin in Germany. WHAT: Germany started construction in August 1961 but it opened in 1963. This wall was constructed by East Berlin to prevent citizens from leaving communism. There was much propaganda with East and West Berlin to say that wall was actually for protection. COLD WAR: Soviets tried to spread communism to all of Germany. -
Russia Invades Afghanistan
WHO: Soviets against Afghanistan and helped by US in Afghanistan. WHAT: Soviets came into north Afghanistan but resistant fighters on Afghan side used guerrilla tactics against Soviets. In 1987, US came in air with missiles so Soviet leaders had to withdraw. COLD WAR: Marked end of improving relations in Cold War. US helped stop further spread of communism.
