China becomes communist
Mao Zedong announced that the Chinese Communist Party has control of China. This means that communism covers a large part of our world and that scares the USA. This is a big this in the cold war because the USA is trying to stop the spread of communism when the Soviet Union is trying to spread it. -
The Marshall Plan
This is where the USA gave money to the countries in europe that were harmed in WW2. This money provided to keep those countries from going communist and they became loyal to the USA. This relates to the cold war because many of the countries that refused money turned communist. -
Creation of NATO
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is set up to help the allies. If one country goes into war their allies will follow, They are also a group for peace and they try to avoid war. This relates to the cold war because Russia wasnt invited to join and the USA denied it. -
Soviets create and test nuclear bomb
Soviets get farther in the space race with their first nuclear bomb. This scares the USA and the space race keeps going. This relates to the cold war because the USA and the Soviets are competing. Also they are improving war weapons. -
US creates hydrogen bomb
The USA creates and tests the hydrogen bomb. This relates to the cold war because gave the United States an advantage in the nuclear arms race with the Soviet Union. -
Korean War
Korea was divided into 2 allie forces after WW2. South belonged to USA and North belonged to Soviet Russia. The North invaded the South on June 25 and the Un sent troups to support the south. This war "ended" with a cease fire. This is significant to the cold war because it shows that the cold war is still somewhat going on because they only ended with a ceasefire. -
Creation of the Warsaw Pact
The Warsaw Pact is the communist version of NATO. Eight different communist nations joined this group in order to protect themselves from others. This relates to the cold war because the SOviets and the USA are competing yet again. -
Vietnam War
Communist North Vietnam verses south. Eventually the South was able to push the North back. This is impportaint to the cold war because the USA joinded a war that we worn't a part of and it dragged the Russians in to support the otherside. -
Sputnik
This was the world's first artificial satellite. Russia was able to launch Sputnik and this caused the start of the space race. Many Americans feared that if Russia could launch a satellite that they would be able to launch Nuclear bombs. This relates to the cold war because it was a competition between Russia and the USA. -
Bay of Pigs
The USA tried to attack and take over Cuba. This is a failed attack.This is part of the cold war because we were trying to destroy communism. -
Berlin Wall
Russia built a wall around East germany to keep them away from the West. Russia was trying to keep people in their section and they didnt agree with the governing of the other sections of Berlin. This relates to the cold war because Russia was trying to keep their part communist and the USA, Fance, and Britian had joined forces and tried to make Berlin not communist. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
Americans found nuclear missles on the island of Cuba. The Soviet Union installed nuclear missles here and they were close enough to hit the USA. JFK and the Soviet Union have a long discussuion and they finnaly decide that if the Soviet Union removes the missles that the USA wont invade Cuba. This relates to the cold war because it could have beome a full war if they would have launched one of the missles. -
USA sends a man to the moon
The Usa were able to send a man to the moon and therefore they were one up in the space race. This is part of the cold war because of Russia andthe USA's competition in the space race. -
Fall of the Berlin Wall
Many were protesting to get out of East Berlin. Communist fell and people started tearing the wall down. Eventually the wall was slowly betting beaten down and people were alowd to finnaly pass. This showed that the USA had won a small portion of the cold war and that Russia was slowly falling. -
Collapse of the Soviet Union
The Soviet Union fell apart into 15 different countries and the USA rejoiced, this was mostly caused by the radical reforms that Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev put in place. This is related to the cold war because the USA was one up on the Soviets because they fell apart.
