Berlin Airlift
When berlin was divided, the Soviets cut off supplies like food and basic needs to west Germany in order to get the allies to coaperate with the Soviet's demands. But Gernal Curtis LeMay came up with a plan toget supplies to Western Berlin, by plane. by the next year the soviets were so stunned by the sucess of the airlit they signaled an interest in ending the blockade. -
The Marshall Plan
In January 1947 President Harry Truman appointed George Marshall Secretary of State. With the US already giving aid to Europe for the damages of World War 2 George Marashall came up with the Marashall Plan. The plan was to rebuild the economes of western Europe and the key to that was modernize industry, remove trade barriers and support Europe until it was back on its feet. -
NATO
With the fear of expansion of Communist goverment, 11 Western nations including the United Statees created a organization called North Atlantic Treaty Organization or NATO. -
The Korean War
In 1950 north korea invaded south korea and the untited nations felt the need to get involved. But the us military was weak and in bad helath from world war 2 just 5 years earlier. But the army pulled through and moved its way through north korea. But the communist neighbor China intervened and drove the UN back into south korea. By the end of the year China had to retreat and the war ended as a Stalemate. -
Rosenberg Spy Case
In 1951 Julius Rosenberg and his wife Ethel were found guilty of passing classified military information to the Soviet Union. Ethel's brother worked for a Los Alamos atomic bomb project, he was giving the couple the information they needed to transmit to the Soviet Union. On june 19th 1953 the Rosenbergs werre executed. -
The Berlin Wall Goes Up
At the end of Worl War 2 Berlin Germany was split into four parts. Onefor Germany, France, Soviet Union and the US. But competition between the powers turned Berlin into East and West Berlin with the seperation of a wall. East Berlin belong to a communist goverment and the West belonged to a democracy goverment. -

Fidel Castro established the first communist state in the Western Hemisphere. He ruled Cuba for 50 years, in that time he stamped out racism, improved public health care and reduced illiteracy. But he was greatly criticized for extinguishing rhe economy and political freedoms. He didnt have a good relationship with the united states which led to the Bay of Pigs and Cuban Missile crisis. -

The vietnam war was a struggle to contain the communist rule in vietnam. Nationist forces joined up with the United States to prevent the spread of communism. The military lost support by the public and there was no support for winning the war. The leader of the vietnmese had set up head quarters to prevent the communist rule. -
Bay of Pigs
Cuba had recently converted to a communist goverment, and the United States didnt like that. So they came up with a invasion because they feared that cuba would strengthen and side with the soviet union to over throw the US. But the plan didnt turn out as planned. The invaders were hidden in merchant ships and landed on the bay. When the cuban soliders arrived the invaders were out numbered and called for air support. But it didnt come and the invaders had to surrender 3 days into the attack. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
In 1962 the Us discovered Soviet nuclear sites in cuba. President Kennedy feared that there would be a nuclear war if the Soviet Union discovered that he has found the sites. So the President came up with a plan. He would place a naval blockade around the island Cuba, this would stop the soviet Union from delivering military supplies. A few days later the leaders of the great nations made a deal, Soviet Union would dismantale their weapons and the US would not invade cuba and the crisis was over -
Detente Period
Detente is a French word meaning "release of tensions". That is how the early 1970's is known as, there was barely any tension between the US and the Soviet Union. Many people believed that it would be a time to repare the relationship between the two great powers. Leonid Brezhnev visited President Nixon in 1973 and warned Nixon that America's taking Isreals side over Arab intrests was putting a strain on the Detente period in the Middle East. -

On Friday Febuary 22nd 1980 The United States hockey team won a victory against the Soviet hockey team who has been undefeated in the Olympics since 1954. The US then won the Olympic gold metal against Finland. -
Fall of the Berlin Wall
Berlin was physically seperated at the end of World War 2, East Berlin and West Berlin. East Berlin belong to the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin belong to the American, British and French sectors. In mid 1989 the people of East Berlin began to protest about the goverment and the West Berlin began to take control of Berlin. On November 9th 1989 the wall was opened to the people who wanted to move between the to parts. People of East Berlin goverment were forced to resign. -
The Fall of the Soviet Union
In the late 1980s the Soviet Union slowly began to go down hill. The Union lost the arms race and international competition of the west. And thats how the economy started to collapse. Then the political parties began to collapse, and bit by bit the Soviet Union began to collapse and on December 10th 1991 the world watch as the Soviet Union slpit into 15 different countries.
