The Marshall Plan
The Marshall Plan was developed for the US to give the Western Europe money to help reconstruct their nation. The Marshall Plan was mostly just to aid as much as they could post war. -
Creation of NATO
12 nations created NATO to protect themselves from the powerful Soviets to not take over or spread anymore communism. During the Cold war the Soviets became very powerful and NATO was there to help stop them. -
The Korean War
The North Koreans decided to invade South Korea for more land and power. The invasion of North Korea into South Korea was the first military invasion of the Cold War. The US helped the South Koreans keep the North Koreans out. -
Creation of Warsaw Pact
The Warsaw Pact made a treaty between the Soviet Union, Albania, Poland, Romania, Hungary, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Bulgaria. They made the Pact of defend each other from outside attacks. -
Soviets Launch Sputnik
Sputnick was the first artificial satellite to be launched into space. It advanced such technologies for military and science. It took 98 minutes to orbit the Earth for the first time. -
Fidel Castro comes to power in Cuba
Fidel Castro overthrew the dictator, Fulgencio Batista, with an armed revolt and took over Cuba. The US was uneasy about Castro and also his relationship with the Soviet Union. Fidel Castro comes into power of Cuba during the cold war. -
The Vietnam War
Vietnam was spilt into North and South like Korea. The North was communist and the South was not. The US helped the South hold an election for one government so that the communists wouldn't win. The US also helped South Vietnam not be taken over from the North Vietnam. -
Bay of Pigs
The Bay of Pigs was an invasion into Cuba. Cuba was getting out of hand with their power and realtionship to the Soviets. The Brigade 2506 invaded the beaches of the Bay of Pigs and the plan failed miserably. Things started to go wrong right after another and the Cubans started firing back and destroying defense systems. -
The Berlin Wall goes up
The Berlin Wall went up to blockade Berlin from the rest of Germany. East and West Berlin were divided and could no longer use the resources from each side. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
Castro wanted revenge on the US for the Bay of Pigs invasion. The Soviets infromed the US there were missiles in construction and installation in Cuba. The Soviets and Cuba were working together against the US. -
US sends Man to the Moon
The first person to walk on the moon was Neil Armstrong. He went up in the Apollo 11. This mission put the US ahead of the Soviets in the Space Race. -
Olympic Rivalry: 1972 Basketball Game
The men's US basketball team took on the Soviets for the Olympic gold medal. Even during the Cold War the Soviets and US basketball teams had a war through basketball. The game ended with the Soviets ahead 51-50. -
1980 Olympic Hockey Game
The US played the USSR in Hockey for the Olympics. It was the miracle on ice when the Americans finished with an astonishing win and the score being 4-3. -
The Fall of the Berlin Wall
The Fall of the Berlin Wall was the end of the Cold War. It let Berlin become apart of Germany once again. -
Collapse of the USSR
Mikhail Gorbachev resigned on the 25th of December. As the end to the Largest Communist Country ended the Cold war ended.
