French and Indian War
This war was primarily the French vs the British colonies with different Native American tribes supporting each side. The war lasted around 9 years. It ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1763. -
Stamp Act of 1765
Colonist were required to pay taxes on every single page of paper they used. This included playing cards, dice, and Newspapers. Colonists were immediate outraged by the act. -
Boston Massacre
A deadly riot breaks out on King Street in Boston. The riot first began as a brawl between American colonists and a single British soldier. Five colonists were killed and six were wounded after the British opened fire. -
Boston Tea Party
A political protest at Griffin's Warf in Boston, Massachusetts. American colonists dumped 342 chest of tea in the harbor as a reaction to the British for taxing them. -
Intolerable Acts
A series of laws passed by the British made to punish colonists after the Boston Tea Party. These acts include, the Boston Port Act, the Massachusetts Government Act, the Administration of Justice Act, and the quartering Act. -
First Continental Congress Meets
Carpenters' Hall in Philadelphia, selected delegates from each of the 13 colonies met. They would discuss how they should react to the British government's restraints on trade. -
Battles of Lexington and Concord
The British marched into Lexington and Concord with the hope of being able to suppress the rebellion by seizing weapons from the American colonists. These battles would have the opposite effect and helped kick off the start of the Revolutionary War. -
Olive Branch Petition Sent to England
The petition was the final effort of the Second Continental Congress to persuade the King of England to not let the conflict between the colonies and Britain grow. George III would reject the petition and declare the colonies to be in open rebellion. -
Thomas Paine's Common Sense Published
After the Battles of Lexington and Concord, Thomas Paine would argue that the revolution should not just be against taxation but a call for the colonies' independence. This was the first work to openly ask for independence from Britain. -
Declaration of Independence Adopted
The declaration was written to communicate to the British the Colonists' belief of basic principles and freedoms and rights. The Declaration would help unite the colonies in their fight against Britain. -
Battle of Yorktown
This battle took place in Yorktown Virginia, and would mark the conclusion of the American Revolution. Cornwallis would end up surrendering to Washington which ended the war. -
Treaty of Paris Signed
The treaty ended the American Revolution, and made the United States an officially recognized independent nation. Representatives from the Us, Britain, Spain, and France signed the treaty. -
3/5 Compromise
This compromise was between delegates from the Northern and Southern states at the Constitutional Convention. They agreed that three-fifths of the slave population would be counted for determining direct taxation and representation in the House of Representatives. -
Great Compromise
This was a solution to where both large and small states would be represented equally. They would create tow houses of Congress, the House of Representatives, and the Senate. In the House each state is assigned seats in proportion to the size of it's population. In the Senate, each sates has two delegates no matter its size. -
Bill of Rights Adopted
The bill of rights guarantees civil rights and liberties to the individual. The bill was made because of several states wanting constitutional protection for individual liberates.
