Events Leading up to the Russian Revolution

  • The Great Northern War

    The Great Northern War
    Peter the Great was the czar at this time. He wanted to give Russia an outlet on the Baltic and Caspian Seas. These seas were controlled by Sweden and the Turks and Tatars. Peter the Great planned to attack them in order to give Russia these outlets to sea.
  • The Decembrist Revolt

    The Decembrist Revolt
    A group of nobles and army officers tried to get rid of the czar's government. However, the czar, Nicholas I, killed many or sent them to Siberia. The five leaders were killed. Even though they failed, they were still considered heros.
  • Czar ALexander II Emancipates the Serfs.

    Czar ALexander II Emancipates the Serfs.
    Alexander freed the serfs. One of his thoughts was that since the Russian armies were weak since they consisted of serfs, if the serfs were free, they would become stronger and so would the army. Alkthough at first to the serfs being free was a great thing, it left them very poor. They were able to buy and sell, but only in the worst qualities. It affected the serfs and the people around them, but in a very positive way.
  • The Assassination of Alexander II

    The Assassination of Alexander II
    Alexander II was killed in St. Petersburg. A group of people who were trying to overthrow the czar autocracy killed him. They wre called the "People's Will". They were in control of the "peasants' revolution" and was achieved after the death of Alexander II. This helped the peasants and serfs all over Russia.
  • The Russo-Japenese War

    The Russo-Japenese War
    Russia took over Port Arthur on Liaodong Peninsula. The Japenese wanted it back but Russia Refused. This affected countries around it as well as the United States. President Theodore Roosevelt was involved in a meeting for peace.
  • Bloody Sunday

    Bloody Sunday
    It started off as a peaceful protest by the people. The protest was led by a priest. They were protesting about the lifestyle they had and wanted it to be changed. They marched through St.Petersburg to the Winter Palace, and they wanted help from the czar Nicholas II. The people felt as though they were slaves instead of actual human beings with rights of their own. Troops stopped them at fired shots at the crowd; killing many. This affected all of Russia because strikes broke out everywhere,
  • The Revolution of 1905

    The Revolution of 1905
    The Revolution of 1905 was sparked from Bloody Sunday. It affected everyone in Russia. People were everywhere were going on strike, protesting, and demanding rights. People were tired of being treated unfairly by the royals.

    Russia was involvevd in this war for many reasons. The main reason was because Serbia was attacked by Austria. Russia and Serbia were allies. It greatly affected Russia because in the end it left many of its people starving and cold.

    Czar NIcholas II Abdicates the Russian Throne
    Nicholas II had to give up or abdicate his throne. Russia was in war against Germany and Austria. There were food shortages and many soldiers deserted the government. There was a demand for Czar NIcholas II to give up his throne. This all affected the people of Russia since they had no food or shelter and no ruler.
  • The March Revolution

    The March Revolution
    After the first world wa, Russia's people were left cold and starving. Because of this, workers demanded food but were rejected, so they went on strike. The workers on strike encouraged other workers to join them. Everything got so out of hand, that playing off of this, it was then that Nicholas II was to give up his throne and was the last czar. Many people were angry because they still believed in royalty.
