Events leading up to the Russian Revolution

  • The Great Northern War

    The Great Northern War
    The Great Northern War was fought from 1700-1721 by Charles Xll (Sweden) and Peter the Great (Russia.) The war was mainly for power of over the Baltic region. By the end of the war, Sweden had lost their leading power of the Baltic region, and was replaced by Russia.
  • The Decembrist Revolt

    The Decembrist Revolt
    The Decembrist Revolt was a group of nobles and army officers that tried to overthrow the czar's government. The revolt resulted in the czar Nicholas ll, imposing censorship, banning books that contain liberal ideas, creating a secret police, and enforcing Russia Nationalism and loyalty to autocracy.
  • Czar Alexander ll Emancipates Serfs

    Czar Alexander ll Emancipates Serfs
    In 1861, the new czar Alexander ll emancipated the serfs. Meaning, he had freed the serfs and allowed them to keep their homes and tools. Also, Alexander ll relaxed censorship, encouraged school building, and improved health care.
  • Assassination of Alexander ll

    Assassination of Alexander ll
    On March 13, 1881, Alexander the ll was killed on the streets of St. Petersburg by a bomb thrown by a member of the, "People's Will" group. This group employed terrorism and assassination in their attempt to overthrow Russia's czarist autocracy.
  • Russo-Japenese War

    Russo-Japenese War
    The Russo-Japenese War was known as the "First war of the 20th century." Also, the war developed out of rivalry between Russia and Japan for dominance in Korea and Manchuria. In the end, Japan had felt as though they had won the war because of gaining a series of victories over Russia, including Port Arther which is Russia's largest port.
  • Bloody Sunday

    Bloody Sunday
    On Bloody Sunday, unarmed people joing Father Gapon in a march to present a petition for better working conditions. In return, the soldiers shot hundreds of people, executing five leaders, resulting in a massacre.
  • Revolution of 1905

    Revolution of 1905
    The Russian Revolution lasted from January 22, 1905 to June 16. 1907. The Revolution consisted of worker strikes, peasant unrest, and military mutinies. Overall, there were four main problems in Russia, such as an agrarian problem, nationality problem, labor problem, and the educated class as a problem.
  • World War l

    World War l
    Once Russia was part of World War l, they had allied with Britain and France in fighting Germany and Austria. Nicholas ll was still the czar (leader) at the time being. Russia had suffered druing WWl because industries were not developed enough to meet the needs for war supplies, and the transportation system couldn't supply the armies at front.
  • The March Revolution

    The March Revolution
    The March Revolution with-held a large amount of smaller protests, arguments, fights, etc. At this time, the DUMA with the temporary government was still in charge.
  • Czar Nicholas ll Abdicates the Throne

    Czar Nicholas ll Abdicates the Throne
    On March 15, 1917, the one and only Nicholas ll was basically foreced to abdicate the throne. Over the years, Nicholas ll has just lost all favorism towards him because of the acts he has presented, leading him to giving up his power. In replacement, DUMA sets up the Provisional Government (temperary government.) This government finally introduced freedom of speech and freedom of religion.
