Events Leading Up to the Revolution

  • The Great Northern War

    The Great Northern War
    This war took place from 1700-1721. It was caused when Swedish influence began to be less important. Russian got Ingria, Estonia, Livonia, and a strip of Finnish Karelia as a result of the peace treaty with Sweden.
  • The Decembrist Revolt

    The Decembrist Revolt
    Nobles and several army officers formed a small group and attempted to overthrow the czar, Nicholas I. Afterwards, he lkilled several of the leaders and sent the rest to Siberia.The result of this rebellion as censorship on books, ideas from the West, and having the secret police spy on thousands of poeple.
  • Czar Alexander II emancipates the serfs

    Czar Alexander II emancipates the serfs
    Alexander frees the serfs from forced labor. However, this leaves them with no way to get food and no place for them to stay, as nobles don't have to house them anymore. Thousands die of starvation as a result. The people that used to be serfs that survived help stabilize Russia's unstable economy.
  • The Assassination of Alexander II

    This was the event that changed the czars from Alexander II the Nicholas II. A bomb was thrown under his carriage on the way to the capital and killed him. Nicholas II became the new czar at a young age.
  • The Russo-Japanese War

    The Russo-Japanese War
    Russia and Japan both wanted to own the Korean area, and they fought a war to decide who gets it. The Russians suffered tremembdous losses in this war, and their own people shamed the army. The Russian's lost the Liaotung Penninsula, a section or railroad, and a section of an island to Korea.
  • Bloody Sunday

    Bloody Sunday
    Revolutionary groups march on Nicholas II's palace. His guards open fire on the crowd and kill about one thousand people in total. The public's spite of Nicholas II grows stronger from this day until the day he gets removed from power.
  • The Revolution of 1905

    The Revolution of 1905
    This was an attempt to turn the autocracy into a constitutional monarchy. During this time there are many strikes formed, including everyone from railroad workers to armed forces. The autocracy remained, but a cabinet of ministers was created.
  • World War I (Russian Involvement)

    Russia helps defend its ally, Serbia, from Austria-Hungary and Germany. This war had the most countries fighting in it then any other war before it, so it was named a world war. Nicholas II, the last czar, was kicked out of power after this war. The Russian involvement in the war ended on March 3rd, 1918.
  • Czar Nicholas II abdictates the Russian Throne

    Czar Nicholas II abdictates the Russian Throne
    The Romanov family, also known as the Royal family, had lost its power to the throne when Nicholas's brother refused to be the next czar. This allowed the communist Joseph Stalin to take power.
  • The March Revolution

    The March Revolution
    The March Revolution was a movement for a regime change in the Russian government. Thousands of soldiers left their posts to join the Revolution. Eventually, Nicholas II was taken from power and killed. Joseph Stalin replaced him and tore down any relics of the Czarist era.
