    Ancient Greece

    In ancient Greece they had a Direct Democracy. The decisions in government were made by all the people. It worked on a small scale, Gave a voice to the poor and rich, and it emphasized civic participation. It took place in B.C

    Ancient Rome

    In Ancient Rome they had a republic form of government in which citizens elected their representatives which would govern them. They also had a senate. It influenced America because it gave them this idea to use in their government. This occured in the B.C

    Magna Carta

    The Magna Carta was a document made to limit the king and protect the peoples rights. It was the first document forced on a king.
  • Mayflower compact

    The Mayflower compact was an agreement made by settlers ariving at Plymouth in November of 1620. It was the first governing document of the Plymouth colony.
  • Thomas Hobbes

    Thomas Hobbes was an english philosohper. He is best known for his politcal work. Thomas Hobbes also wrote "Leviathan" which was published in 1651.
  • John Locke

    John Locke was an english philosopher. He was one of the most influential enlightment thinkers. He published "Two treatises on Government" in 1689.
  • English Bill of Rights

    The English bill of rights came before the Constitution along with the Magna Carta. It limited the power of the english ruler. It was written by parliament.
  • Jean-Jacques Rousseau

    Jean-Jacques Rousseau was a philosopher, writer, and composer. He politcally influenced the French Revolution. He also wrote "The Social Contract" in which he talked about how to make a politcal community.
  • Baron de Montesquieu

    Montesquieu was a french lawyer. He published "On the Spirit of Laws".
  • Voltaire

    Voltaire was a French enlightentment writer. Voltaire was famous for his attacks on the Catholic Church.
  • Cesare Beccaria

    Beccaria was an Italian criminologist, jurist, philosopher and politician. He is known for "On Crime and Punishment".
  • First Continental Congress

    The First Continental Congress met in Philadelphia from Sept. 5 to Oct. 26 in 1774. Every colony but Georgia sent their delegates. At the meets the delegates discussed many things.
  • Second Continental Congress

    The Second Continental Congress was a meeting of delegates from everyone of the 13 colonies. They began coming together in the summer of 1775. They met in Philadelphia and Pennsylvania.
  • Declaration of Independence

    The Declaration of Independence announced the 13 colonies independent from Britain rule. It was approved by the Continental Congress. It influenced American government by seperating us from British rule.
  • Articles of Confederation

    The Articles of Confederation were adopted on Nov. 15, 1777 as the first Constitution. The articles were not ratified until March 1, 1781. The articles were what helped America function at first.
  • Treaty of Paris

    The Treaty of Paris in 1783 ended the revolutionary war. It also recognized the United States as an Independent country. Influenced American government by making us independent.
  • Shay's Rebellion

    Shay's Rebellion was an armed rebellion that took place in Massachusetts. It took place during 1786 and 1787. It effected American govenrment by making the Federal government reonsider it's own powers.
  • Philadelphia Convention

    In Sept. 1786 delagates from 5 states called for a constitutional convention to discuss improvements for the Articles of Confederation. The convention occured in Philadelphia on May 14,1787.
