The Stamp Act
A tax put on the American colonies by the British it said they had to pay a tax on all sorts of printed materials such as newspapers, magazines and legal documents. Revenue aided Great Britain. -
The Boston Massacre
First conflict between British soldiers and colonists where many colonists were killed. It escalated the anger between the two groups of people and made the colonists work harder and become more determined to win freedom from Britain. -
The Boston Tea Party
Protest against British taxes in which the "Sons of Liberty" boarded British ships disguised as Indians and dumped tea into the harbor. -
Intolerable Acts
A series of laws (ex: Massachusetts being under military rule) set up by Parliament to punish Massachusetts after its Boston Tea Party protest against the British. -
The First Continental Congress
As conditions worsened with England, the colonies have first meeting to discuss the issues facing them and make certain decisions if they were to go to war with England. i.e Starting military training for the colonies. -
Battles of Lexington and Concord
These battles initiated the Revolutionary War between the American colonists and the British. British governor Thomas Gage sent troops to Concord to stop the colonists who were loading arms. The battles resulted in a British retreat to Boston -
The Second Continental Congress
Delegates met and decided peace was no longer an option. They organized the continental Army, called on the colonies to send troops, and selected George Washington to lead the army. -
Start of the American Revolution
Began with the Battle of Lexington and Concord. The thirteen colonies rejected the British monarchy and worked in war to stop being ruled by British authority. -
Declaration of Independence
Document written by Thomas Jefferson that declared independence from Britain and the formation of a new country, the USA. -
End of American Revolution
War came to an end when General Cornwallis was surrounded and forced to surrender the British position at Yorktown, Virginia. Then two years later, the Treaty of Paris made it official: America was independent.
