Missouri Compromise
The Missouri Compromise was an effort by Congress to defuse the sectional and political rivalries triggered by the request of Missouri late in 1819 for admission as a state in which slavery would be permitted.To keep the states in balance -

Kansas-Nebraska Act

Dred Scott Case
Dred Scott sued for his freedom because his owner took him to free territory. The Supreme Court said he was still a slave, slaves were property, and the 5th amendment protected the right to own property. Any law banning slavery was therefore unconstitutional -
