Events Leading Up To The Civil War

  • Missouri Compromise

The Missouri Compromise of 1820 aimed to balance power between slave and free states. It admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state, maintaining a balance in the Senate. It also prohibited slavery in the Louisiana Territory north of the 36°30' parallel, except in Missouri, temporarily easing tensions between pro- and anti-slavery factions in the U.S.
  • Nat Turner Rebellion

The Nat Turner Rebellion, also known as the Southampton Insurrection, occurred in August 1831 in Virginia. Nat Turner, an enslaved preacher, led a group of enslaved people in a violent uprising against white slaveholders. The rebellion resulted in the deaths of around 60 white people before being suppressed. In retaliation, hundreds of enslaved people and free Blacks were killed, many without trial.
