  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    In 1820 Missouri requested the to become a slave state, If Missouri were to become a slave state it would throw the of the balance between slave states and free states. This being an issue congress compromised and would allow for Missouri to become a slave state and letting Maine become a free state. This this compromise divided the North from the South; the north being free states and the south being slave states.
  • Nat Turner's rebellion

    Nat Turner's rebellion
    Nat turner was a slave that lived in Virginia, he had enough with the cruel treatment. He and other slaves rebelled by murdering approximately 60 white people; this included women and children. The reason for this was to instill fear in white peolpe, by doing so he would drive them away from the town, the state and in some cases the country. Turner and 55 other slaves were caught and executed; Turner's rebellion was said to be the bloodiest.
  • Abolitionist Movement

    Abolitionist Movement
    The movement that would split the U.S in two also known as The Abolitionist Movement; helped bring an end to slavery meaning that slave trade, slave imports, and slave owning would bcome illegal . The Northern abolitionist believed that slavery was wrong and inhumane, while the south saw no problem with slavery. With these two opposite point of views, conflict arose between the North and the South.

    Fugitive Slave Act
    The fugitive slave act was passed by congressin 1850. This allowed for all escaped slaves to be captured and be sent back to there masters. The issue with this was that free Aferican American in the north were at risk becase they could potentially be kidnapped and be unjustifiably enslaved. And it lead to just that, many free Aferican Americans were wrongfully enslaved.

    Undereground Railroad
    The Underground Railroad was a secret network coposed of special routes, and safe houses. With the help of abolitionist and free Aferican Americans it allowed for runaway slaves to reach freedom.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    Uncle Tom's cabin was a novel writen by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Published in 1852, the novel revolved around the main character Uncle Tom. This book depicted the cruel, and inhumane treatment that slaves went through. Things such as, beatings, the killing of children so they were not to become slaves, and the cost of freedom were mentioned in this novel; because of its taboo topics this novel opened the eyes of a number of Americans.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
    In 1854 the Kansas, Nebraska Act was introduced. This Act gave the power to the people to vote wether the states would become free or slave states. This became an issue, with abolitionist wanting the states to become free states and pro slavery supporters wanting the states to become slave states. Tension between these to sides arose and blood began to spew. A seriers of violent attacks began to occur between the abolitionist and the pro slavery supporters; This would lead to the civil war.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    In 1847 Dread Scott; a slave. Sued for his freedom. After ten long years Scott's case was brought foward to the U.S supreme court. The ruling was as follows; free or enslaved Aferican Americans were not allowed to become U.S citizens. Therefore Scott cold not sue the U.S supeme court because he was not a citizen of the U.S; Dread Scott remainded a slave.

    Lincoln having the majority of his support and votes from the northern states (free states) and little to no support frm the south states ( slave states); Lincoln became elected president in 1860. the country split into two; the South wanting nothing to do with the north, formed the confederacy.
