Missouri Compromise
Missouri Compromise of 1820 The Missouri Compromise was a peice of legislation that was supposed to resolve some tension between Northern states and Southern states. It stipulated that every new state that was free had to have another one that is a slave state. This was to keep political balance between the two, but it ended up causing a lot of tension. -
Nat Turner's Rebellion
Nat Turner was a former slave who lead a huge rebellion in Virgina. He and about seventy slaves killed about sixty white people. Unfortunately, this lead to many slaves being lynched, and a huge loss of rights for slaves and other free black people. -
"Uncle Tom's Cabin" Published
Harriet Beecher Stowe "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was very influential. It caused many people to feel bad about the plight of slaves. They felt sympathetic and like they couldn't just let the issue go. -
Dred Scott v. Sanford
Dred Scott, a slave in Virginia, moved with his owner to a free state, then moved back to a slave state. He decided to sue for his freedom because he feels that he should have been freed when he moved to a free state. Unfortunatly, his case was unsuccessful, and the court decided that slaves did not have any rights to their own person, making them basically property. -
Abraham Lincoln's Election
