The Great Northern War
War was between Russia and Sweeden. Peter the Great, current czar a the time, led Russia into war hoping to capture land. The land he was hoping to capture was to create his dream port city. This city would later become St. Petersburg. -
Decembrist Revolt
A small group of nobles and army oficers tried to overthrow the czar's government, Czar Nicholas I was the czar at the time. He crushed the rebellion and executed five leaders. Hundreds were exiled to Siberia. -
Czar Alexander II emancipates the serfs
In 1858, 9 members of various provinces together decided to end slavery. In March 1861, Alexander II signed into effect the Emancipation Manifesto. Groups of serfs were given land in all areas, except a few areas. Serfs were now made to pay taxes and pay other fees. -
Assassination of Alexander II
Czar Alexander II was assassinated in the streets of St. Petersburg. He was killed by a member of the "People's Will" group. They resorted to terrorisic acts. Czar Alexander II was killed by and hand-thrown bomb. HIs son would then take over his rule. -
The Russo-Japanese War
This war was the first great war of the 20th Century. Russia was looking for a warm-water port on the Pacific Ocean that was operational all year. In 1903, negotiations were tried but proved to be nothing but a waste of time. Japan would go on to defeat Russia in this war. -
Bloody Sunday
Priest Gregory Gapon led a march to the Winter Palace in Russia. This was the beginning of the violent 1905 Revolution. This was a peaceful march wanting to ask Nicholas II for refroms. When they arrived, soldiers opened fire on the marchers. About a hundred died and hundreds of others were injured. -
The Revolution of 1905 Begins
Bloody Sunday was the beginning of the Revolution of 1905. The revolution was a very violent time for Russia. Many riots and terrorist acts were committed during this time. This uprising was the attempt to turn Russia from an autocracy to constitutional monarchy. -
Russia Gets Involved in WWI
Russia first got involved againt Austria. They had many successes and moved onward towards Germany. They were poorly-led and badly-equipped. They were greatly defeated when they went up against the Germans. -
The March Revolution
Russia experienced quick changes in 1917. Riots broke out, street demonstrations took place, and Russia faced food shortages. Soldiers even joined the riots. The miliitary lost control of this situation. -
Czar Nicholas II abdicates the Russian Throne
Czar Nicholas II is the last czar to Russia. He was czar during the revolution of 1905. He created the Duma, an elected assembly that made minor reforms. The Duma had little power, though, and thier reforms failed. He abdicated the throne due to the Petrograd riots.
