A treaty is signed that ends the Mexican War and gives the US new territory and now Congress does not know if they should be free or slave states. -
Compromise of 1850
Congress passed this bill by Henry Clay that would admit CA as a free state but would enforce a harser fugitive slave act. -
The Republican Party was formed
Northern Democrats and Whigs formed the Republican Party in order to oppose slavery. -
Kansas Nebraska Act
An act proposed by Stephen Douglas that would let the issues of whether KS or NE would be a slave or free state by popular sovereignty. -
Bleeding Kansas
A quarrel between slave staters and free staters led by John Brown to decide whether KS would become a free or slave state, free staters won. -
Lincoln Douglas Debates
Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas debate over the topic of slavery for the seat of the senate. Douglas wins but Lincoln becomes famous all over the country. -
Raid of Harpers Ferry
John Brown leads a raid on Harpers Ferry, VA in order to supply slaves with weapons, so they could rebel, but it ended when the US army came and captured John Brown. -
Execution of John Brown
John Brown executed by the VA government and became a martyr for the abolitionist cause. -
Election of 1860
Abolitionist and Republican Abraham Lincoln was elected President, so the southern states seceeded to protect the institution of slavery.
