The Compromise of 1850 including The Fugitive Slave Act
The Compromise of 1850 was made from 5 significant bills. It was made to solve conflict over slavery, in new land. It made California a free state, Utah and New Mexico was left to decide for themselves, to be a slave state or a free state. There was a new Texas and new Mexico boundary, It was made easier for slave owners to have runaways under the Fugitive Slave Act. The Compromise was written by Henry Clay. People’s bitterness over the provisions contributed to The Civil War. -
Kansas-Nebraska act
Stephen Douglas made a bill to organize the land of Nebraska. That land would soon become Nebraska, Kansas, Montana, and both of the Dakotas. This bill raised lots of controversy, because of the possibility of slavery being in the areas where it was once banned. The controversy and debate over the slavery would soon spiral leading to The Civil War. -
Preston Brooks vs Charles Sumner
Conflict between Charles Sumner and Preston Brooks started on May 22 of 1856. Brooks a pro slavery democrat from South Carolina attacked Sumner an abolitionist republican from Massachusetts. Brooks attacked him with a walking cane after a speech that was given by sumner. This relates to The Civil War because Sumner was one of the first members of congress that argued that The Civil War should be fought. -
Bleeding Kansas
Bleeding Kansas was a period after Kansas had new territory in 1854. In this period there was many outbreaks of violence and guerrilla warfare with pro slavery forces and anti slavery forces. During the time span of 1855 and 1859 55 people were killed. Bleeding Kansas then encouraged a debate about slavery in the future which was a key element of things leading the The Civil War. -
Dred Scott vs Sandford
The Dred Scott case was a long fight for freedom. This case was by Dred Scott a black enslaved man. This case even made it to the Supreme Court. The court ruled that sense Dred Scott was an enslaved man he was not a citizen. After this decision by the court the abolitionists were enraged. This gave a boost tot he anti slavery movement, which was a step leading into the Civil war -
Lincoln-Douglas debates
Throughout August and October of 1858, Abraham Lincoln, the republic candidate, argued with Stephen A. Douglas, a democratic senator. They had 7 debates with thousands of citizens watching. They debated on the bug issue at the time, slavery and the expansion with new territories. This fired up the anti slaves, they were fighting harder about slavery which had a big impact on the civil war. -
John Browns Raid on Harpers Ferry
John Brown an abolitionist lead a group to raid Harper’s Ferry. He was trying the destroy the institution of slavery. He also wanted to start a revolt of the enslaved people. After the raid, it fired up the south, this decreased the trust between the north and south. As the south and north were both angered it was leading the The Civil War. -
Election of Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 16th president on Tuesday November 6th of 1860. The biggest conflict during the election was slavery rights and state rights. Abraham Lincoln was the president during The Civil War, and helped throughout the war.
