    Compromise of 1850
    In this compromise, there were five bills that were based off of Clay’s proposals. He wanted to please both of the north and the south.
  • "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was published

    "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was published
    Uncle Tom was a slave that was abused and eventually killed him his owner. The person that wrote this book wanted to tell the story about Tom to show how badly the slaves are treated and how America needed to stop slavery.
  • Kansas - Nebraska Act

    Kansas - Nebraska Act
    Senator Douglas wanted to form two new territories, the Kansas Territory and the Nebraska Territory. The territory were in an area of no slavery as of what the Missouri Compromise Line said. Douglas then said the states should have popular sovereignty. The people in the north got very mad. They didn’t want more slavery.

  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott fought and fought for his rights because he wanted to be free so he took his case to court. The court told him that because of his skin color, he could never be a citizen therefore he could not sue the nation or have basically any rights. The supreme court also stated that the Missouri Compromise Line was unconstitutional. They kept slaves in the United States.

    Lincoln - Douglas Debate "A House Divided Against itself cannot stand."
    The Lincoln - Douglas Debates were seven long debates. Douglas fought strongly about popular sovereignty as he wanted everyone to be able to choose whether they should have slaves or not. He believes that each state should have the right to choose for themselves and he should not have to worry about what other states do. Lincoln was arguing because he thinks slavery should just overall be done. No slavery in any state. He fought to give all Americans the same rights no matter your skin color.

    John Brown was an antislavery settler that led many men to go and murder 5 people. They went to a pro slavery settlement, invaded, and killed people. This set off lots of fighting in Kansas. Anti slavery and pro slavery people were fighting each other all over the state.

    After Lincoln was elected, many southern states got mad because they thought the government was now in control of everything and they would no longer get a voice in slavery. They wanted to have slavery but the president of the nation hated slavery and really wanted to get rid of it. So South Carolina left so they could make their own decisions.

    Abraham Lincoln is elected as a Republican President
    America was going through the worst time when Lincoln became president. He made sure the states that had seceded knew he meant no hrm and was only trying to help them. He assured them that their would be friendship and they would not be enemies but many people did not want to be friends. The seceding states took over may things and showed Lincoln they were ready to battle.

    Confederate Troops Fire at Fort Sumter, South Carolina
    Lincoln biggest problem at this time was the fort. It's commander would not surrender it. South Carolina starved the people on the fort and did not give them supplies since December. This helped them surrender. Lincoln wanted to send troops to the fort but he was worried that would make other state want to secede. Confederate leaders opened fire and after 34 hours, the U.S. troops surrendered.
