Missouri Compromise
this compromise admitted Missouri to the Union as a slave state and Maine as a free state, maintaining the balance of free and slave states in congress. This compromise started the momentum leading to the Civil war because both sides thought that they weren't getting a fair deal. -
Compromise of 1850
The Compromise of 1850 admitted California as a free state and let new territories added by the Mexican-American war vote on whether or not to allow slavery pleasing both the North and the South. This affected the Civil War because the South showed how willing it was to succeed from the North -
Kansas-Nebraska act
This act created the Kansas and Nebraska territories and nullified the Missouri Compromise by letting settlers vote to allow slavery. This caused a murder of five men and a riot almost causing the civil war. -
Dred Scott Case
This was a case brought to the supreme court by a black man trying to sue for his freedom and the decision was that no black man could ever become a citizen and that the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional. This helped start the civil war because the case ended up only pleasing the South fueling the North. -
Election of 1860
When Lincoln was elected in 1860 and won with only 40% of the votes, the South realized that they were now the minority. This caused the seccession of the South which started the Civil War. -
Attack on Ft. Sumter
This was the first attack of the Civil War by the Confederates starting the Civil War. This was just the start of one of the bloodiest battles in American History.
