    This was a compromise that maintained the balance in congress for free and slave states. It made Missouri a slave state and Maine a free state. It also drew an imaginary line at 36° 30' that made all states above it free and below it slave. The north and the south had different reactions to this compromise that drew them apart.

    The Compromise of 1850 was a compromise that admitted California to the Union as a free state which pleased the north. It also gave New Mexico and Utah territories to decide weather to be a slave or free state. This compromise made the south mad and they threatened to leave the Union which Webster dismissed as foolish talk.

    The Kansas-Nebraska Act was a bill that created two new
    territories. It also abolished the Missouri Compromise which left the two territories to decide to admit slavery or not. The north and the south sent people to sway the vote. Doing that lead to raids and attacks which gave more reason to start a war.

    The Dred Scott act said that Dred Scott couldn't be a free man from living in Wisconsin with his master. The Supreme Court said he couldn't sue because he wasn't a citizen. The Supreme Court also said the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional. This delighted slave holders and Northerners were enraged.

    The election of 1860 showed how divided the country was. The republicans had one candidate, Abraham Lincoln. The Democrats on the other hand had two candidates. Also, the Constitutional Union party also had a candidate. Abraham Lincoln won without single southern vote because the southerners votes where split three ways. The northerners were extremely happy because Abraham Lincoln was against slavery. The southerners were very mad because they thought that they would lose there slaves.

    The attack on fort Sumter was when the north went to the federal fort on the Charleston river and the south shelled the fort for 33 hours until the north surrendered. This unleashed fury in the north. The south where happy that they got the north out of the south.
