Missouri Compromise of 1820
Marine= free state, Missouri= slave state, Compromise draws an invisible line thru the U.S. at the 36x30 line, above the Arkansas territory. Every new state SOUTH of that line would be a slave. Every new state to the NORTH of that line would be free. Only Missouri would be above the line, but To make the Southern states happy, Congress added the slaves that had escaped to the North would returned if they were caught- even from non-slave states. -
Nat Turners Slave Rebellion, 1831
A slave rebellion that spread fear in the south. It killed 55 people. It resulted in retaliation for the rebellion, even to those not involved. -
Compromise of 1850
California was admitted as a free state and Texas agreed to give up its claims towards New Mexico for 10 million, because of this we have our present day borders. During this act it was a crime to help and runaway slave, even in the NORTH. This law made many people in the north furious. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin (1851)
This was a book written about the horrors of slavery and was written by Harriet Beecher. After the book was published this book became one of the causes for the Civil War because it greatly widened the people's minds. -
Kansas-Nebraska act (1854)
In this act of the Civil War the Louisiana Purchase territory was divided in half, so there were 2 territories, Kansas and Nebraska. After this happened it caused the democratic party became free and the republican party gained power among those against slavery, but there was also Bleeding Kansas which had lots of violence. -
Dred Scott Decision (1857)
African American weren't allowed to sue in Federal Court for freedom and they were also considered property. The Missouri Compromise was ruled as illegal because the government couldn't tell states whether the have to be slave or free. -
John Brown's Raid on Harpers Ferry
This raid took place on the Federal Arsenal which was caused because of the hope to cause a slave rebellion. John Brown was later hanged because of being convicted of treason. -
Presidential Election
Abraham Lincoln was elected in 1860, after he was elected the southern states seceded from the union. His first act as president was to make secession illegal, because of this the civil war started.
