  • Wilmot Proviso

    Wilmot Proviso
    Suggested that slavery in the territorry recieved from Mexico, exculding Texas should be abolished. Although, congress decided to veto it. This event led to the start of the Free Soil Party (FSP), which was devoted to stopping the growth of slavery.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    To keep both Congresses satisfied, they proposed a compromise which allowed the North to admit California as a free state and rid of slave trade in Washington DC. The South was allowed to decide if territories would be admitted as free or slave. Passed the Fugitive Slave Law the same year to help slaveholders recapture runaway slaves. This event led to the failure of holding the Union together and upsetting the Northerners.

    Gave the right to slaveholders to recapture runaway slaves. The Southerners thought this was justified. Northerners opposed to it.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    When author Harriet Beecher Stowe published Uncle Tom's Cabin to describe the evils of slavery. Had different reactions from north and south. North believed slavery was cruel and inhumane while the south felt like it was just propaganda from the north.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    Gave Kansas and Nebreaska the option to decide if they wanted to be free or slave states. With news spreading around of this, the pro and anti slavery believers came flooding in trying to impose their ideas upon them.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
    A fairly small war in Kansas. Bleeding Kansas and Bleeding Sumner became the cries for the Northerners against slavery.
  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott Case
    Dred Scott was sued for living on free soil briefly with his owner in the north. Judges believed slaves were not to be considered citizens but property so this case could not be held in court. Out of this case, came out the Missouri compromise which banned slavery because it was unconstitutional.
  • Lincoln & Douglas Debates

    Lincoln & Douglas Debates
    When Lincoln And Douglas were running for senators in Illinois. Lincoln position in election was against slavery. Douglas ended up winning but Abraham became nationally famous.
  • Raid on Harpers Ferry

    Raid on Harpers Ferry
    John Brown and friends raided the federal arsenal and ended up killing 4 people. Their goal in this was to create a slave revolt in Virginia but it didnt work. Brown came out being a hero.
  • The Election of 1860

    The Election of 1860
    Lincoln won the election, which resulted on the Southern states succeding from the Union.
  • Fort Sumter

    Fort Sumter
    Lincoln warned Davis (presdient of South) that he would be sending supplies to the fort. South attacked on April 12 and the Union not having many supplies had to surrender. Resluting in war.
