After the Wilmot Proviso, conflict sparks between northern and southern delegates. Henry Clay decides to make the Compromise of 1850, believing it would settle the disputes. The bill said California was admitted in as a free state and Texas as a slave state. New states that will be admitted will have the chance to decide whether they would become a slave or free state. The Fugitive Slave Act was all passed.

Uncle Tom's Cabin was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. The book was about slaves and their hardships working in the South. The book was meant to support the end of slavery.

This was passed to solve the problem of slavery in Western territories. It overturned the Missouri Compromise of the 36x30 slave line. It support popular sovereignty in the states, and everyone rushed into Kansas to cast their votes.

When people with different view points rushed into Kansas, there was a tiny civil war that sparked among the people. Many people died.

Dred Scott was a loyal slave who sued for his freedom when his master died. This court case went all the way to the supreme court justices. It was ruled that since Dred Scott was considered property, he had not right to sue. Tensions between the North and the South rise as their opinions begin to differ more.

Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglass were competing to become a Senator of Illinois. Lincoln said slavery was wrong, despite it was legally protected by the Constitution. Douglass won the campain, even though Lincoln became nationally famous.

John Brown and his followers took rebellious action against slavery in Virginia 1859. He wanted to stir up a revolt, starting in Virginia and end slavery. It didnt wok and he became a martyr. He was caught, tried in court, and was killed.

Licoln won the election as a representative of the Republican Party. Licoln promised to end slavery, causing the South to secede. They said that if the South voluntarily joined the union, they can voluntarily leave as well.
