Events leading to the American Revolution

  • Navigation Acts

    Navigation Acts
    Navigation acts were made to help the British Empire be self sufficient, and stop things like trade to England and depend less on foreign goods. Although it never was successful as controlling the colonial trade.
  • French and Indian War ends

    French and Indian War ends
    Ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. After the war ended though, the expenses of the war ended up leading to the American Revolution.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    Put a tax on all things printed in the colonies. This was one of three big taxes put on the colonists. Would later help build up to a rebellion against the British.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    British soldiers shot and killed many people after being harassed by a mob. Colonists threw things like snowballs at the soldiers. Once one soldier accidentally shot his gun when hit by an object, the rest of the soldiers fired into the crowd.
  • Tea Act

    Tea Act
    Because the colonists had boycotted against British goods, and trade was hurt the Tea act was passed. The act was passed mainly to help the British East India Company who had a lot of tea. The Tea Act ended up leading to the Boston Tea Party.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    A political protest by colonists that were angry for being taxed unfairly. The colonists, known as the Sons of Liberty, dumped 342 chests of tea into the Boston harbor.
  • Coercive/Intolerable Acts

    Coercive/Intolerable Acts
    Laws passed by the British Parliament that were meant to punish the colonists for their actions in the Boston Tea Party. Theses laws that were a cause of this were The Boston Port Act, the Massachusetts Government Act, the Administration of Justice Act, and the Quartering act.
  • First Continental Congress

    First Continental Congress
    Delegates from the 13 colonies, except for Georgia, met in Philadelphia to organize resistance to the Intolerable Acts.
  • Lexington and Concord

    Lexington and Concord
    The first battle fought of the American Revolution. This was caused by many British troops marching to Concord to seize arms cache. This was big win for colonists.
  • Second Continental Congress

    Second Continental Congress
    Delegates from the 13 colonies met in Philadelphia after the start of the American Revolution. This was big step toward declaring America’s independence from Britain.
  • Declaration of Independence Adopted

    Declaration of Independence Adopted
    Adopted by the Second Continental Congress. It announced that the colonies would become independent and separate from Great Britain.
  • Battle of Saratoga

    Battle of Saratoga
    Occurred during the American Revolution. It was a big victory for the Continental Army and a turning point in the Revolutionary War.
  • Winter at Valley Forge

    Winter at Valley Forge
    A hard/severe winter for the American army that was stationed at Valley Forge. Many of the soldiers died of disease. They started running out of supplies, which led to many problems for the men.
  • Battle of Yorktown

    Battle of Yorktown
    British surrender to American army. This was the end of the American Revolution. It was also the start of the new nation and its independence.
  • U.S. Constitution Written

    U.S. Constitution Written
    The supreme law of the U.S. Was written in Philadelphia at the Constitutional Convention. Written by James Madison, with founding fathers present.
  • U.S. Constitution Adopted

    U.S. Constitution Adopted
    Although written in September 1777, it took until June 1788 to be adopted.
