The First Imported Slaves
The people of Virginia sailed to Africa and brought back twenty African Americans. On the sail back they were treatd very poorly and if they died the men through the Africans overboard. Once the ship returned with the slaves the idea spread around. Soon many states decided to go to Africa and other countries to collect slaves. Soon people found out that not all the slaves were coming from Africa. They were being smuggled from Cuba and this was illegal. -
The First Protest Against Slavery
The first protest against slavery was started by a group of Quakers that were very much Christians. There argument was that how could Christians treat others so horribly when they wouldn't want to be treated like that. Another reason they were anit-slavery people is because they didn't like that when slaves were sold, the masters were breaking up the husband, wife, and children against there own will. This made other people really think about slavery and then others agreed that slavery was bad. -
A Slave Insurrection
South Carolina was a slave state in the 1700s and many slaves wanted to leave and go to a free state. So they formed a large group and started an insurrection. Many of the slaves had escaped and made it to Florida. Then they were deported back and brutally punished. The insurrection was when they came back and revolted against the government rules. There argument was that the Spanish had a law that said any slave that got freed, remains free. In the end they didn't get their freedom. -
The First Fugitive Act
When Congress passed the First Fugitive Act is meant that all escaped slaves had to be returned to their original masters, even if they were in a state that had abolished slavery. The North was upset to begin with, but then found a way to turn things around. They let all slaves have a free trial and didn't find it necessary to put them in jail. This had an affect on the Civil War starting because it started rivalry between the North and the South. -
The Banning of Importing Slaves
In 1807 the Congress decided that importing new slaves should be illegal. People could not ship them into any port or border of the United States. This was passed because to many illegal slaves were being brought in or they were being abducted from there homes. Another reasn was that the population of the slaves states was getting higher in slaves that whites. This upset lots of plantation owners, so some tried to smuggle them. If you were caught you were punished by the amount of slaves. -
The Missouri Compromise
The Missouri Compromise was when Missouri became a free state and then Missouri had to be a slave state to equal out the amount of free and slave states. Making Missouri a slave state made some people mad because it is bigger than Maine. Along with the Missouri Act the Louisanna Territory prohibited all slavery. -
The Nat Turner Rebellion
The Nat Turner Rebellion was when a slave decided to revolt because he was tired of being treated so poorly. Nat and a few other men met up and started with Nat's Master's family. Then they continued on a killed a bunch of whites because they wanted the North to see how angry they were. This only made the South more upset and they punished their slaves more and watched them more carefully. -
Harriet Tubman Helps Slaves
Harriet Tubman was born a slave and attempted to escape multiple times. Finally she succeeded and when she made it to the North she decided to go back. The first time she brought back her family and freed them. Then she started going to plantations and freeing slaves she didn't even know. She used the underground railroad system. Over her years she freed over 300 hundred slaves. -
Senators Speeches
The Senator Charles Sumner gave a speech about slavery which was to potentially attack Andrew Butler. He said things about him and told everyone that Andrew's opinion was stupid. Later on Preston Brooke, Andrew's cousin, said things about Charles. With in the end Preston was beating Charles with a cane. Nobody was ever moved from office, but were warned. This made people have a different out look on what slavery was becoming. -
Fort Sumter
The first shots of the Civil War were fired by the Confederates at Fort Sumter. At Fort Sumter Licohn found out that General Garrison was starting to get in trouble. He was running out of supplies to survive. So Lincohn decided to demand surrendering. Garrison disagreed and then shots were fired. First the General tried threatening people to evacuate before the expedition arrived. That didn't work so arguing began and then the Confederates fired. This began a battle and then the Civil War.
