Events and People Influencing Animal Cognitive Science

  • Ivan Pavlov Wins Nobel Prize

Ivan Pavlov made many discoveries related to animals in his lifetime, one of them being the discovery of the conditioned response, a reflex that occurs in most animals. He experimented right in his own home this theory. He noticed they would drool every time they saw food (linked events). Then, he began to try to link other events to drooling. He rang a bell every time he served them food, and this manipulated them in such a way that they would link the sound of a bell to salivation.
  • Edward Thorndike Publishes "Animal Intelligence"

Edward Thorndike Published many books, but this one inparticular stirred up a lot of thought in society. He was a pioneer in the study of connectionism, the idea that an animal makes connections between events. He focused on problem solving by experimenting with putting cats in puzzle boxes. They'd solve puzzles in order to reach food. these experiments taught him and society the learning and trial/error processes evident in some animals.
  • Jane Goodall Begins Studies in Gombe, Africa

Jane Goodall Begins Studies in Gombe, Africa
At this time, Jane Goodall began a detail log of her observations of a community of chimps in Africa, helping the world learn of their undiscovered acts of intelligence in their everyday lives only found as she began to form strong bonds with these chimps. Within this span of time, Jane discovered acts of male dominance and human like communications and gestures.
  • Jane Goodall witnesses carnivorous behaviors in chimps.

Jane Goodall witnesses carnivorous behaviors in chimps.
Being a first hand witness of meat eating among chimps allowed her to disprove the belief that chimpanzees and other apes were primarily vegetarians.
  • Jane begins to observe tool-making among the chimps.

Jane begins to observe tool-making among the chimps.
Tool-making was a sign of advancement for chimps rarely witnessed before. Jane saw chimpanzees sharpening sticks in efficient ways to hunt and dig for termites in order to best extract them from their mounds.

Jane Goodall founds the Jane Goodall Institute
From the year 1977 forward, the Jane Goodall institute devoted itself to rainforest conservation and wildlife protection. It also focused on rainforest life research, founding the Gombe Stream Research Center, which is a study center for researchers around the world to discover more about rainforest animal abilities and intelligence.
  • Jim Berkland Predicted World Series Earthquake

Jim Berkland Predicted World Series Earthquake
    • Accurately forecasted earthquakes for thirty one years. Has unique method in that he scours lost pet ads in newspapers to see spikes in numbers of lost pets in the days preceding an earthquake.
    • On the thirteenth, he predicted a large quake to strike at the time of the World Series.
    • Sure enough, the quake struck on the fourteenth, proving Jim's doubted method to be accurate. His story broke out in the news and prompted scientists to go into further studies animals and natural disaster.
  • Aimee Morgana conducts parrot telepathy study

Aimee Morgana conducts parrot telepathy study
Aimee Morgana is a biologist with an African Gray Parrot name N'Kisi. She vocabulary trained him for four years, and he obtained a 700 word vocabulary. After this time, Aimee noticed some seemingly telepathic incidents occuring with the bird. Skeptical, she and some other scientists conducted a study to see if it was true. The results were shocking to her and to the world. It brought scientists into a completely new territory of discovery about animals.
