-High tensions between the North and South over the increase of slavery
-Henry Clay was the person who came up with this
-Laws that helped keep the balance between slave and free states -
The Nullification Crisis
-Southern States believed that taffirs only helped the north so they didnt like them
-John C. Calhoun(VP) said that if any state found a federal law unconstitional, they didnt have to follow it.
-Federl Gov. didnt care what South Carolina had to say, so they threatened to secede.
-Henry Clay found a compromise, which lowered the tax if SC stayed. -
Fugitive Slave Act of 1850
-It was an act passed by congress that said anyone could capture a free black person in the north if they were escaped slaves.
-Made everything much more tense -
Compromise of 1850
-Congress couldnt decide if the new territories that they won from Mexico should be slave or free states.
-Henry Clay said California would be a free state and New Mexico would have "no restrictions" -
Bleeding Kansas
-Proslavery people from Missouri went to the new terriorty of Kansas to vote whether or not it would be a Slave state.
-Many aboliotonists came to Kansas to try and make Kanasas Free.
-Because of the tensions between anti & Pro slavery people, there was lots of fighting. -
Dred Scott Decision
-Slave who lived in a free state, but then he moved back to Missouri
-Free and slave blacks were not allowed to be citizens of the united states.
-Court decided thast the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional.
-Slavery was allowed in all of the new territories. -
Attack on Harpers Ferry
-An Aboliotionist named John Brown thought slaves should fight for their freedom
-John Brown led them to attack on Harpers Ferry
-They were captured, but many people thought that John Brown and the slaves were heroic. -
Election of 1860
-Abraham Lincoln wins!!
-Southern states started to secede because they felt like everyone in office was against them
