Texas Admitted to the Union
President John Tyler signs congressional resolution to annex Texas -
US Tried to Buy Land (Slidell and Polk)
Polk sends Slidell to Mexico to buy New Mexico and California but Mexican public finds out and puts pressure on president Herrera who decides not to meet with Slidell. -
US Troops Stationed at Disputed Border
General Taylor's army marches towards the Rio Grande into disputed territory. -
US Declares War on Mexico
President Polk asks Congress to declare war, and $10 million and 50,000 volunteers are dedicated to the war effort. -
US Victory at Veracruz
General Winfield Scott lands at Veracruz and begins a 12 day siege and bombards the city to eventually occupy it and win the battle. -
Mexico City Surrender
General Scott moved in seemingly without opposition until a battle at Punon, and he occupied the palace on 25 July 1847. The city finally surrendered on 14 September 1847. -
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo Ratified by both sides
About two months after the treaty is ratified by the US Senate, it is ratified by the Mexican Congress.
