  • 1555

    Peace of Augsburg

    The Peace of Augsburg was made by the Diet of the Holy Roman Empire to allow state princes to choose either Lutheranism or Catholicism as the religion of their domain. This Peace ended the ongoing feud between the two religions. People who lived on the property of the religion they opposed could sell their house and leave to live on the property of the religion they favored.

    French Wars of Religion

    These were a series of wars between the Protestants and Roman Catholics. French tolerance of Calvinism angered the Roman Catholics and they massacred a Protestant congregation and the Protestant leader was killed, causing the war to keep going. After, a peace was compromised until the new Protestant leader became heir to the throne, causing more uproar from the Roman Catholics. This was ended by the Edicts of Nantes.

    Bartholomew's Day Massacre

    This event was a massacre of French protestants in Paris. It was arranged by Catherine de' Medici and carried out by Roman Catholic nobles. This was one of the series of civil wars between the Roman Catholics and Protestants in France in the 16th century.
  • Edict of Nantes

    The Edict of Nantes was a law made by Henry lV of France, and it stated that all his Protestant subjects would have religious liberty. This was made because Henry had converted from Calvinism to Roman Catholicism and it also helped bring an end to the Wars of Religion.

    This was an ongoing religious conflict in the 17th century in Central Europe. It started off a battle between the Roman Catholic and Protestants in the Holy Roman Empire but evolved to be more of a fight about power than religion. This war was ended by the Peace of Westphalia.
  • Treaty of Westphalia

    This was a peace treaty made to end the 30 Years War and brought peace to the Holy Roman Empire. Also, the treaty helped the break the power of the Holy Roman Emperor which let the Germans choose the religion they wanted to follow in their land.
