The Outbreak of World War I
Austria-Hungary initiated World War I by declaring war on Serbia in July 1914.There were over 27 countries that were mentioned as the Allied and Associated Powers in the Treaty of Versailles. However, World War I was global since colonies of European nations went to war also. -
World War I Ended
The war ending greatly effected Europe. For example, The Great British Empire begins to decline. Austria-Hungary collapsed during the war and was torn apart by its multi-national divisions. Both Austrian and Ottoman Empires were destroyed with out having a stable alternative. -
The League of Nations is founded.
This was to ensure that war never broke our again. After the turmoil the Versailles Treaty caused, many looked to the League of Nations to bring stability to the world. The League of Nations was to be based in Geneva Switzerland, since Switzerland was a neutral country and did not fight in WWI. -
Hitler becomes Chancellor of Germany
Hitler was named Chancellor of Germany on January 30, 1933. His plan was to do away with politics and make Germany a powerful, unified ordering an expansion of the state police, and by putting Herman Goering in charge of a new sercurity force, that was composed of entirely of Nazis and dedicated to stamping out whatever opposistion to his pary might arise. -
War between Italy and Ethiopia; Italy annexes Ethiopia
On October 3, 1935 Italian armed forces invaded Ethiopia. The League of Nations recommended a number of commercial and financial sanctions against Italy after they decided that Italy had violated its obligations under the covenant with the outbreak of the war between Italy and Ethiopia, President Roosevelt issued an embargo on the exports of arms ammunition, and implements of war to the two belligeret nations and restrictions on travel by united citizens of the beligerents. -
World War II begins
The second world war was the most widespread and deadliest war in history. It involved more than 30 countries and resulted in more than 50 million military and civilian deaths. This war was sparked by Hitler's invasion of Poland in 1939. WWII lasted 6 years until the final allied defeat of both Nazi Germany and Japan in 1945. -
World War II Ends
WWII caused Germany to be divided into 4 zones of occupation by the victorious powers, pending a more permanent political settlement. England and France no longer held a status of power comparable either to the United Stated or the Soviet Union. Japan was temporarily placed under US military rulle. Japanese military leaders were tried and convicted of war crimes, but the Emperor was allowed to retain his position. -
West Germany joins N.A.T.O
10 years after the Nazi's were defeated in World War II, Germany joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, better known as N.A.T.O. This is a mutual defense group aimed at containing the Soviet expansion in Europe. Germany had been divided since the end of WWII. The Americans, British, and French controlled West Germany and West Berlin. The Soviets controlled East Germany and East Berlin -
Cuban Missile Crisis
In October, an American U-2 spy plane secretly photographed nuclear missile sites being built by the Soviet Union on the island of Cuba. For several days, the world waited seemingly on the brink of nuclear war. They hoped for a peaceful resoluton to the Cuban missile crisis. On October 28, the Russian Premier conceded to President Kennedy's demands by ordering all Soviet supply ships away from Cuban waters and agreeing to remove the the missiles from Cuba's mainland. -
Fall of Berlin Wall
On November 9, 1989, thousands of Germans brought down the Berlin Wall. The Berlin Wall was the most visible symbol of division at the heart of Europe. While standing, the Berlin Wall represented the division of Europe. The Berlin Wall coming down represented the end of the Cold War. -
Bomb Attack In London
On July 7, 2005, there were 4 suicide bomb attacks throughout London. At 8:50 am, explosions tore through 3 trains on the London Underground rail system killing 39 people. One hour later, 13 more people were killed when a bonb went off on the upper deck of a bus in Travistock Square. In all, more than 700 people wre injured and 52 were killed in the 4 attacks. -
Greeks riot in streets in protest of Government
On May 5, 2010, protests were sparked by the government plans to cut public spending and raise taxes. This was done in an attempt to reduce the debt. It was part of a 110 billion euro bailout plan that was aimed to solve the Greek debt crisis. 3 people were killed in the protests. This was one of the largest protests in Gressce sincel 1973.
