Spain and the Philippines
In 1521, Spain claimed the Philippines. Within 50 years, the natives were crushed, and the archipelago was officially named after Spanish king, Philip the Second. The reason that the natives were so easy to conquer was the fact that they were far from united, each fighting multi sided wars before the arrival of the Spaniards. -
Rise of the Dutch
A Dutch fleet returns, after a year's absence, from the East. The fleet carries all manner of exotic spices and strange products. -
The East India Company
In 1602, The Dutch established the East India Company. It was the world's first corporation, also being the first corporation to hold military power. The East India Company was known for sealing trades with military action, or the threat thereof. -
Malacca
In 1641, the Dutch fought against the Portuguese for control over a coastal city called Malacca. After a relatively short fight, the Portuguese were driven out, and The Dutch used the city to open trade with China. -
The Fall of the Dutch
Into the 1700's, the growing Power of both Britain and France caused the Dutch monopoly to waver. The Dutch monopoly over Eastern trade finally fell apart in the early 1900's.
