    Christopher Columbus and Spain

    Christopher Columbus after many tries convinced the Spanish monarchs to finance his exploration. The purpose of his exploration was to find a route to Asia by the Atlantic.

    Columbus Sets Sail on First Voyage

    Columbus and his crew set sail on their route to find Asia. he had 3 ships the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria. On this voyage he hoped to gain God, Glory and Gold.

    Columbus Reaches Land

    Columbus' 3 ships reach the Bahamas instead of Asia. He searched for months to fin the Gold and Glory he came for, but he found nothing but told spain he did.

    Columbus leaves Bahamas

    Columbus left 40 of his men to make a settlememt in Hispaniola. Meanwhile he returns to Spain.

    When he returned to the Americas he found his settlement destroyed.

    Columbus Arrested

    Columbus returned to the Bahamas to Hispaniola where the colonists had a brutal battle against each other. It was so bad the Spanish sent a new governor and took Columbus back to Spain in chains.

    Columbus Returns to Bahamas

    Most of Columbus' charges were dropped. He then convinced the Spanish King to let him take on more expedition. While there he had an attack with Indians.

    He discovered the St. Lawrence River and explored the region in three voyages.

    Hernando De Soto

    De Soto eplored the southeast region of North America (Florida) for Spain. He was searching for gold, good land with a route from Mexico to the Atlantic. At every stop he and his men made they attacked Indian villages murduring people and taking others as slaves. He and his men "discovered" the Mississippi River. After his death his men reached Mexico with neither a colony or gold.

    Francisco Cornado

    Explored the Southwest Americas and the Great Plains. He seeked God, Glory and Gold. On his expedition for Spain he 'discovered" the Grand Canyon. While on his journey he treated the Indians vey badly and brutally killed them. As word spread of his coming, many Indians commited suicide. while on his voyage he converted some Indians but he finished his voyage with no gold and glory.

    Francis Drake

     Drake was secretly commissioned by Elizabeth I to set off on an expedition against the Spanish colonies on the American Pacific coast. He sailed with five ships on his voyage.

  • Henry Hudson

    The Lords Seventeen, the highest authority of the East India Company, tires to convince Henry Hudson to find a safe passage to the wealthy spice islands. Due to the truce of 1609 the Dutch were not allowed to trade in "places, towns, ports, and havens". They needed to find trade and commerce.

  • Richard Hakluyt

    Richard Hakluyt was the leader of Chesapeake tribes in the settlement at Jamestown. This confederation consisted of 30 tribes and 9,000 people.
  • Jacques Marquette & Louis Joliet

    They explored the Mississippi River to see if it was a passage to the Pacific Ocean and to see if fabled kingdoms of Quivira and Theguaio were real. They found out that the Mississippi River does not have a passage to the Pacific Ocean; however, they encountered “monster” fish and “wild cattle.” Monster fish were catfish and wild cattle were buffalo.
