This time when columbus sails, he sails to claim land for spain.

Spain and Portugal sign the treaty of tordesillas

Because spain and portugal were very active in exploring south america tensions grew greater between them, s o much so that the Pope Alexander VI had to step in to keep the peace between the two countries.

Pedro Alvares Cabral reaches modern day brazil.

Amerigo Vespucci sails to siouth america

Vespucci, an italian serving under the portugese sailed to south americas east coast and, realized that this strange place was not in fact asia, it was a new world.

The "new world" is named america after amerigo vespucci.

Portugese Explorer Ferdinand Magellan Attempts to Circumnavigate the world.

Magellan, a portugese explorer, attempted a daring and bold exploration. With 5 ships and 250 men he began his voyage, following the coast of south america until he found what would become the strait of magellan. He travelled through and out into the pacific, he eventually made it ot the philipinnes, but was killed there. Ultimately, only 1 ship with 18 crewmembers made it around the world.

Hernando Cortes lands on mexican shores
