Captain Dias took a trip with his crew far down to the coast of Africa until they reached the tip. During this a storm that lasted days relocated the ship from the tip around to the other side. Then they explored the southeast coast of Africa. They were planning on sailing to India, but they were tired and had very little food so they went back home. -

Christopher Columbus convinced spain to pay for a plan to find a route to Asia by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean. That same year in October he reached an island in the Caribbean. He thought that he had reached the East Indies. -

Both Spain and Portugal signed the Treaty of Tordesillas to show that they respect the idea of them dividing the Atlantic Ocean north to south with an imaginary line to show what territory belongs to who. -

Vasco de Gama
Vasco da Gama explored the east African coast. A year later he made it to the port of Calicut which is on the southeastern coast of India. The spices, rare silks, and germs thar were in Calicut's shops stun both him and his crew. They returned back home in 1499 with spices like pepper and cinnamon. -

Japanese's first encounter with Europeans
They first encountered when the Portuguese sailers washed up on the shore of southern Japan after a shipwreck. Also their merchants came soon after which were clocks, eyeglasses, tabacco, firearms, and other unfamiliar items. The Japanese where happy to expand their markets which lead them to receive the new comers and their goods. -
