The island they were on, Crete, was the center for trade for the Mediterranean until 1450 BCE. Ships let them dominate the trade. Lots of environmental disasters after 1700 BCE, ended by invaders. -

Mycenaeans
Built large fortresses and palaces. Expanded until 1100 spreading into Anatolia and Italy. Where the legendary Trojan War comes from, was in Anatolia. Adopted city-states which were first commercial centers before turning into bigger areas with a center city. -
800 BCE
Language improves
Adopt the Phoenician alphabet and add vowels. Allows for a more sophisticated use of language like philosophy and science. Allows for important people like Socrates and Plato -
776 BCE
Olympic Games
Brought together the city-states and also brought in talented foreigners to compete. Had to maintain peace to participate. -
550 BCE
Rome founded
Rumored to be founded by Romulus and Remus in 753 but actually Etruscans that had migrated their. Had monarchial rule, powerful cities and strong trade, but in 509 a republic was set up. Expanded until they were a great power of the Mediterranean. Julius Caesar claims dictator and conquers even more before being murdered. -

Persian Wars
Started with rebellions but then Persia turned to conquer Greece. Divided them into Athens and Sparta which greatly weakened Greece -
330 BCE
Alexanders conquest
Finally achieved the goal of conquering Persia after many other states. -

Pax Romana
A time of great peace that last about two centuries. Economic growth allows for networks of roads that connect to the Silk Road, administrators and a common law code was set. Did not prevent some corrupt emperors along the way. -

Jesus's Death
Jews had always resented Roman rule so when they found their Messiah and turned to Christianity that did not change. Administrators became worries and say them as a threat so they had Jesus crucified to help keep all in line and stop the new way of thinking -

Consolidated power and constructed a new capital after the empire had been split. -

Franks and Carolingians
500 leader Clovis converted to Christianity, reunified about half of the previous Western Roman Empire. 511 he died and power went mostly to aristocratic warriors. 751 Carolingians displaced the line of Clovis- Charlemagne the greatest of this new line. Reestablished central rule over much of central Europe and took title of Emperor of Rome in 800 CE. -

Holy wars to take back the holy land for Christians. Promised forgiveness for all sins and so horrible acts and violence ensued. Enemy had greater dignity, Saladin acted with chivalry. -

Renaissance
Lasted until about 1640. A new challenge of thinking, against set ways, against the church and for free thought. Led to the Reformation as so many people challenged or questioned the church and as a move efficient printing press made the bible more easily accessible. -

Accidently discovered America, sparked the age of discovery and allowed for the Columbian Exchange. -

Splits the world for Spain and Portugal, by the Pope. Americas to Spain and African Slave trade and Brazil to Portugal. -
