The Watt Steam Engine officially went into production in 1776 in Great Britain. The manufacturer, James Watt had worked on the model for several years before it was ready for production and distribution. This entry is included to represent the shift into industrialization which led to the emergence of more efficient modes of production. This efficency was very valuable for the states later involved in "total wars", who relied on resources and technology. -
Napoleon Wins Battle of Austerlitz
This painting is François Gérard's "La bataille d'Austerlitz", completed in 1810. It can currently be found in the Palace of Versailles in France. This entry was included as it shows the use of conscription as well as the Napoleon's military tactics which were later emulated. The Napoleonic wars also included blockades that was one of the first instances of using the economy in warfare. -

This entry is an Original British Gas mask created in 1943. This entry represents the new development of gassing the emerged as a method of warfare in the 20th century. Gassing of civilians became increasingly common in WWII, therefore creating a "total war" which affected all aspects of life.
