Humphery was able to dive deep into a closeted world and reveal that the homosexual community also lived regular everyday lives. Humphrey was criticized for the lack of consent from his subjects nor revealing to the community that he was a researcher and deceiving them.

This included: being under custody, strip searching, and being assigned to prison cells with three other people. This study was designed to force reasonable people to commit to unreasonable actions or choices.
