John White traveled to Roanoke, an island off of North Carolina. Later, he became governor of Roanoke and brought more settlers. -
Second Try To The Colonies
John White convinced Raleigh to try the colonies again. After trying they failed because colonists mingled with neighbors and got killed by the Natives. -
Spanish Armada Is Defeated
The English defeated the Spanish Armada. This inspired English to take control of land in America. -
Charters
In 1606, King James I granted charters to Virgina Company of London and the Virgina Company of Plymouth. -
First Permanet English Colony
The first permanet English colony was named Jamestown in honor of King James. It began to fail but then grew when John Smith took control. -
Jamestowns Grows
In 1608 only 38 colonists remained alive. Later when John Smith came and took over he said "He that will not work shall not eat". This statement worked and got all the colonist up and working. -
Growing of The Colonies
In 1612, John Rolfe developed high-grade tobacco, which changed Jamestown in many ways. More people moved for a better life and jobs but Jamestown began to use slaves when more work was needed. -
Battles
English colonists, who came to Virgina, fought the Natives and also each other. By the end of the 1670's only one-fourth of the free white man were free. -
Bacon's Rebellion
After being refused for approval from Governor Berkely, Bacon took control of the House of Burgesses and burned it to the ground.
