Established after WW2 in the 1940s, the International Union for Conservation of Nature made its goal to protect nature and the effect humans had on it. It began to study the effects of pesticides and human interference to biodiversity. Since then it has created conventions and labels of endangered species to protect the biodiversity of the Earth. -

a fog descended upon London that combined with all the soot and smoke coming out of chimneys to become a poisonous miasma. This smog lasted 5 long days and resulted in 4,000 immediate deaths, and up to 12,000 long term deaths. -

On the Minamata island of Japan, a power plant named Chisso polluted local waters with waste, leading to the residents developing metal poisoning. The disease affected the residents from the 50s to the 70s. -

Theory developed by a NASA scientist that says the organic organisms and inorganic elements of the earth work together to self-regulate conditions on Earth. From the Gaia Hypothesis, many discoveries of the systems the Earth uses to self-regulate have been identified. -
Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring
She published a book about the use of pesticides and its harmful effects in the environment. She criticized industrial chemical companies for spreading false information about the use of pesticides to prioritize profits. -
Love Canal Catastrophe
In the 1970’s, the toxic waste buried beneath the enclave of Love Canal began to bubble up and appear around much of the town. The government stepped in and tried to clean it up, although the effects on the populous would linger for years. -
First Earth Day
The first Earth Day takes place in order to protest against environmental harm to the planet. It was estimated that over 20 million people protests, and became the largest demonstration in American history. -

Seveso Dioxin Cloud
North of the town of Seveso a chemical plant exploded, resulting in a massive cloud of dioxin being released over the area. Over 80,000 animals were killed in the cloud, and many were hospitalized as a result. -
Whaling
Focuses on children, marine mammals, and ocean environment. This nonprofit organization has been protecting marine life for over 40 years. Sea otters are dying from disease caused by urban runoff (water pollution). Toxic chemicals in the ocean also affect the marine life. -
Bhopal
a pesticide plant in Bhopal, India released nearly 30 tons of various poisonous gasses, namely methyl isocyanate, over the surrounding area, causing at least 15,000 deaths and affecting over 600,000 people. -

After one of the nuclear power plant’s reactors exploded, the nuclear power program evolved into an environmental movement to help the Chernobyl area recover, as well as develop research for the radioactive city, and how it effects the living. -

Exxon Valdez oil spill
over 11 million gallons of crude oil were spilled into the area of Alaska known as “Prince William’s sound”. This was done by an oil tanker known as the Exxon Valdez, which was owned by Exxon and was decommissioned in 2009. -
Kyoto
The Kyoto Protocol operates with the United Nations Framework Convention on climate change to help transition industrial companies to limit and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by setting goals for individuals to comply with. -

the documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” was released. The film was very successful in spreading awareness about the growing environmental problem the Earth was facing, and helped to kickstart a further environmental movement. -
Deepwater Oil Spill
An explosion rocked the Deepwater Horizon oil rig on April 20th of 2010, which later caused the rig to sink on April 22nd of the same year. Estimates for oil that leaked into the Gulf during the incident range from 130 million to 205 million gallons of oil. -
