Mach Bands
Mach discovered, what is known today as Mach Bands. Mach found that there are thin light bands along the inner edges of the gradients which cause optical illusions. This effect is due to contrast perception which we over process and under process where there is constancy. He founded the idea that our senses decipher the illusion before sending it to the brain. To put this in layman terms, you flinch before you know what you're flinching at. -

Of all of Mach's research articles and books, this is the book that he disputed Newton's view of absolute space. Mach proved that Newton's statement of absolute space was incorrect. Mach used a bucket of water. He showed that as a bucket with water was spinning, the bucket spins first, then because of inertia, the water would spins independently. -
Analysis of the Sensations
Mach argues that sensations are not simply raw experiences, but the interaction of experience with a pre-formed memory. An example, when we hear a known melody, we recognize it no matter what. It can be hummed, buzzed, or strummed on a guitar. Even if one or more notes are incorrect, we still recognize it. These sensations studies paved the way to Einstein's Theory of Relativity. Mach stated that inertia results from a relationship of that object with all the rest of the matter in the universe. -
Principles of Supersonics
Mach studied the ratio of the velocity of an object to the velocity of sound. An object travelling less than the speed of sound was labeled as subsonic. If an object was travelling above the speed of sound, it was labeled as supersonic. For example, an aircraft at Mach-1 has an airspeed of 767 mph. Mach also noted that an objects ability to obtain these velocities was relative to the medium, it was travelling through. -
