autonomy vs doubt
Kenny aged 2 is learning how to use the bathroom by himself. In Erikson's second stage, there is a split between wanting to be autonomous (i.e. dressing one's self, feeding yourself and using the bathroom alone), and feeling shame and doubt for continued failure of independent tasks. -
Identity vs confusion
Kenny, aged 15 is trying to figure out who they are and how they fit into society. During Erikson's 5th stage, an adolescent is said to be exploring their belief's, aspirations, and sense of personal identity. This stage of development is important because it sets up an idea of what the adolescents wants to be and how they will fit in as an adult. And if this stage isn't accomplished, it will lead to confusion on where they fit in. -
Generativity vs stagnation.
Kenny is now 40 and wants to raise children and become more involved in his community. In this 7th stage of Erikson's development, the conflict is between wanting to give back to society and avoiding feeling unconnected. If Kenny succeeds he will feel useful and like he's leaving a mark on his world. If he fails he will feel as if he's unproductive and disconnected from society.
