A child is learning to express their independence in doing those activities they feel they can do themselves. This stage is allowing the child some choices in expression and to be secure in their abilities.

    Initiative vs Guilt
(3 to 5 years) Visiting with friends their granddaughter was having a tickle Ms Kristine time. With social interactions a child can experience how they can control what happens in their environment within established boundaries. Pretend play, playdates and socially interacting with adults allows a child to further develop their self confidence by taking some initiative in what is happening in their environment.
