Erikson's Eight Psychosocial Stages

  • Sarah finding insuperiority in school: Industry vs inferiority

Sarah finding insuperiority in school: Industry vs inferiority
Sarah (9) is a quiet girl who doesn't speak up in class and so she does not get many gold stars on the board. Erikson's industry vs inferiority stage expresses how this is where people learn confidence and assurance in themselves based on positive feedback. When a child does not receive this they are prone to hold back and question themselves.
  • Sarah decides to marry: Intimacy vs isolation

Sarah decides to marry: Intimacy vs isolation
Sarah (29) has been exclusively seeing her partner Bryan for 5 years now and they have decided to marry and start a family with each other. In Erikson's Intimacy vs isolation stage, people seek companionship and a long lasting commitment to someone who they can rely on. When companionship or intimacy is avoided this can lead to loneliness and sometimes depression.
  • Sarah looks upon her family and life: Ego integrity and despair

Sarah looks upon her family and life: Ego integrity and despair
Sarah (79) is watching her grandchildren play on green grass while her son sets the table and daughter in law works the grill. She sees the evidence of a good healthy life and the great family she brought into it with a smile. In Erikson's stage of ego integrity and despair, people will look back and judge their lives and see if they did everything they wanted to do, if there were doubts or regrets. They will look and see if they fulfilled their goals and duties and be satisfied if successful.
