Erikson (Psychosocial Theory) Timeline

  • Chad gets Married

Chad Duguid (25 years old) decided to get married to Bonnie and share the rest of their lives together. In Erickson's timeline sixth stage intimacy versus isolation occurs during early adulthood. The challenge for young adults is to risk their newly formed identity by entering a committed intimate relationship, usually marriage. Those who are unable or unwilling to make themselves vulnerable end up isolated, without an intimate relationship.
  • First Child

On March 10th 2000 Chad and Bonnie welcomed their first child into the world. Chad realized that in order to raise a family he has to support them. He begins his career in construction to support his family. The 7th stage of Erikson's theory involves the challenge of generatively versus stagnation. The generative person in middle adulthood is focused on how to contribute to the well-being of the next generation, through providing for and caring for others.
  • Retirement

After 30+ years of hard work, 4 children, and many animals. Chad has finally been able to retire and relax from supporting his family for all those years. In the final stage of Erickson's theory the challenge is ego integrity versus despair. This is a stage of looking back and reflecting on how one’s life has been experienced. The person who accepts what life has provided, good and bad parts alike.
